Liguria: This little region of northern Italy is placed in the north-west of the Italian peninsula. PORTOFINO.
It is therefore surrounded by the most fascinating places of Southern Europe and it is itself one of the most visited destinations both for tourist and cultural reasons.

Its territory is mainly dominated by hills making it ideal for the cultivation of vineyards that is in fact, together, with the olive tree, one of the more common in the region. From the coast to the hill it is spread with medieval villages placed in very natural and charming surroundings. Many shows and fairs take place in these villages, especially during summertime when many tourist visiting from Italy and abroad come to enjoy the seaside and the beaches. FOTO

The Ligurian territory can be divided into three main areas: the coast, the countryside and up to the north the mountains that, although never reach heights of above 2300 Mt. are nevertheless home to very cold winds and during winter to some snow fall.

On the coast you can find many plains formed over time by the estuaries of rivers coming from the north. In these plains, ancient communities founded their homes which have developed today into towns and cities such as Genoa, Albenga and Chiavari.

A very famous one takes place in the little town of Recco, few kilometers to the east of Genoa, the capital city of Liguria.

The astonishing "Cinque Terre"

RIO MAGGIORE

Although Liguria is full of fascinating places one that deserves to be mentioned apart is Cinque Terre. It is so called because of the five villages (Riomaggiore, Manarola, Vernazza, Corniglia and Monterosso) that make up this strip of land sheer above the sea.

Apart from its natural beauty this land is also famous for its wines, especially the well known Sciacchetrà, a sweet, white wine with very limited production. For more information on Cinque Terre go to www.cinqueterre.it
